The sanitarium in El Paso had medication that was not available in Deming, but that also meant that it was more expensive. Millie found a job in El Paso at a chocolate shop, but the money she made there would not be enough to cover all of her expenses so she got another job at a café as a waitress. .
The reason most women enter prostitution is for the need of money, as anyone can see Millie at this point had a real need for money. Millie began to turn tricks on the side to make more money and quit her job at the Chocolate factory to have more time to spend with her sister. Florence's condition was getting worse her doctor informed Millie that her sister would have to have surgery, costly surgery that Millie could not afford. Millie could not possibly raise the money on her own so she called up Jenny, a house prostitute she met at a party. Jenny referred Millie to Al a male friend of hers that fronted Millie the money for her sister's surgery. Jenny's madam Billie Miller paid Al back and Millie in turn would return the money to Billie with a profit of course. .
Millie moved to Carrizozo, New Mexico where Billie's house was located. When Millie went to work for Billie she was only sixteen but when Billie asked her about her age she told her she was eighteen. If Billie had known the truth, she would not be able to work for her. Billie taught Millie the rules of the house and a few other things as well, such as how to check men for venereal diseases. She also taught Millie how to be polite to customers while making money at the same time. Billie also took Millie for a medical exam before she began working for her just to make sure she was healthy and disease free.
Millie began working and as she learned the tricks of the trade, she built up a high profile clientele. Her clients included politicians and the sheriff of Carrizozo. After working in Carrizozo Millie successfully worked four more towns, she worked in Silver City, Roswell, Socorro, Lordsburg and Alamogordo.
