How effective is the opening chapter of Knowledge of Angels

The warm atmosphere changes abruptly. Jill Paton-Walsh writes "They stopped work at once, and listened". The use of a short sentence is very effective because it creates a pause in the chapter signifying an omen that something is going to happen. She then uses a long sentence interrupted by a broken phrase, in describing the appearance of the young man, "His snow shoes seemed clumsy - great baskets on his feet- by using the punctuation is this way, Paton-Walsh deliberately slows down the action, making the reader more anxious of what is going to happen next, for what she has created beforehand has already compelled the reader to read on, more eager to know what is going to happen next. As the reader proceeds, the rhythm of the story stops and the writer creates impact as she writes "Trouble." a one-word sentence. .
Irony is again created when the young man tells the Nevados about the "wolf" that they have discovered. However, Paton-Walsh continues with a new paragraph describing the lives of the Nevados, which has nothing to do with the mysterious "wolf". This technique is very successful as it engrosses the reader for Paton-Walsh has created a whole new warm atmosphere in this paragraph, in contrast to the cold and colourless conditions in the mountains. She writes, "they would come down burned as brown as walnuts- an effective simile that adds colour to the scene. In my opinion, I feel that it is also a small break for the reader from the nerve-wrecking situation of the mysterious wolf. .
The author then re-introduces in the conversation of the Nevados again, with details of the mysterious "wolf" with long fangs. As the Nevdaos have decided to set off and kill the creature, she writes "It felt like a holiday". This brings to mind the wine and food they had while dancing in the mountains. But immediately after the author adds "but the old men were afraid", this dramatic change of mood instantaneously creates an ominous atmosphere.
