Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world. 1200 years ago a canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon its shores. Over the centuries that followed a remarkable society developed in isolation on the island. For reasons still unknown they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These monuments, known as moai, are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered. Easter Island is one of the world's most unique inhabited places on the world but its simplicity and un-modernized society is one of a dying breed. Peace and serenity is the reason for my pilgrimage to this wondrous place. Peace is not easily found on the shores of America. Business and the busyness of life in America allow only subtle amounts of peace in one's life. In order for a long and joyous life we all need extended amounts of peace. In this world there aren't too many serene places uninfluenced by modernized culture. These places are dying and the entire world is on its way to be modernized. Easter Island is one of a dying breed. Here people can be in peace and tranquility with out the sounds and troubles of commotion that we all experience every day. Easter Island like every other Island is surrounded by water which separates it from other civilizations, this has also had a dramatic affect in why Easter Island has been able to stay isolated for many years. Easter Island is a great get away for those who need relaxation in their lives. My pilgrimage to Easter Island is to seek the tranquility that can be found there. Easter Island is also known as Rapa Nui; a tiny speck of land in the South Pacific. It was formed by a series of massive volcanic eruptions. Easter Island was only inhabited by sea birds and dragonflies for millions of years. Lava tubes and pounding waves have created hundreds of sea caves and a treacherous coastline. Easter Island is located between Chile and Tahiti, and the island is one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world.
