It was shocking because it was something no one had encountered and it was just the beginning. Although some safety measures were taken at other schools the people of America had no idea that it would happen all over the nation, affecting more than just the small community of Moses Lake Washington. Since the shooting many counseling programs have been installed at the schools in the area and in the community. Garret Lybert, a student who witnessed the shooting said that a lot of attention was paid to students and prevention directly after the shooting but now the attention is almost diminished completely (Grapes 1). Garret also said, referring to the programs, "Loukaitis [the shooter] wouldn't have turned to any of those programs, he didn't like people, and people who are having problems don't like talking to people for help (Grapes 2).".
On October 1st, 1997, another shooting occurred. Luke Woodham stabbed his mother to death then went to school and shot several students to death and wounded seven more (Morgan 2). However this was the first shooting that allegedly had satanic ties. The town which he lived in Pearl, Mississipp,i had only 20,000 residents but a small satanic cult called "Kroth," but this group seemed not to be the main reasoning of the shooting. "If you talk to town officials, they'll tell you it might be a little Satanism, a little bit of reading into Hitler, a little bit of boy-girl romance problems, of anger at parents and at classmates," said police chief William Slade (Morgan 2). One of Woodham's friends, Justin Sledge said "He was simply pushed to a pivotal point in his life in which the world has spit on him for the last time, and he was fixing to spit back (Morgan 3)." After another terrible shooting the nation looked to blame something but this time the answer was more easily found. With a tie to Satanism any sort of trench coat wearing, dressed in black student, listening to Marilyn Manson became the target of suspicion.
