Kennedy issued Executive Order 10925, which established the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. Its mission was to end discrimination in employment by the government and its contractors. The order required every federal contract to include the oath that "The Contractor will not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, creed, color, or national origin. In fact, the contractor will also take affirmative action, to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated fairly during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin.".
It's now that the government called for "affirmative action."The term meant taking appropriate steps to eliminate the broad practices of discrimination. Affirmative action was establish to insure that applicants for any position would be judged without any consideration of their race, religion, or national origin. In 1964 The Civil Right Act declared no one in the United state should be excluded from participation, denied the benefits or be discriminated against under any program or activity while receiving federal financial assistance. Two years later the order was amended to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex.
There are many barriers facing minorities and women in terms of trying to achieve educational success and labor market success. People are residential segregated on almost every level rather we measure it in terms of education or employment. This often lead to stereotyping and low expectations by others if people are not of the same standards. .
In terms of education African Americans, Hispanics and women all face challenges in today's society. Even though, females outnumber males in every ethnic and racial group at any major university they are still been faced with the economy problem of been under represented.
Affirmative action is the reason why more minorities have integrated into universities in the United States.
