The Great Gatsby Film Critique

 

            The film "The Great Gatsby- begins its story with the introduction of Nick Caraway, a native of Minnesota. Nick moves to the suburbs of New York in the summer of 1922 to pursue a career in the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, just across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. Throughout the movie, Nick visits Tom and Daisy periodically, and on one of those visits is introduced to Jordan Baker, a woman that he begins a romantic relationship with. The first revelation of the movie comes when Jordan informs Nick that Tom is having an affair with a woman named Myrtle Wilson. Myrtle (and her husband) live in the valley of ashes, a dumping ground between West Egg and New York City. .
             As both the story and the summer progress, Nick finally accepts an invitation to one of Gatsby's parties. While there he bumps into Jordan Baker, and they meet Gatsby for the first time. After talking privately with Gatsby, Jordan tells Nick that Gatsby and Daisy dated in Louisville in 1917 and that he is still in love with her. A few days later, Gatsby asks Nick to arrange a reunion between he and Daisy. Nick agrees and invites Daisy to have tea at his house without telling her that Gatsby will be there. After a period of awkwardness, Gatsby and Daisy's love is quickly rekindled, and they begin an affair. .
             A short time later, Tom begins to grow suspicious of his Daisy and Gatsby's relationship. One day while lunching at the Buchanans' house, Gatsby stares at Daisy with such passion that Tom realizes, for the first time, that Gatsby is in love with her. Although Tom is involved in an affair himself, he is angered that his wife is being unfaithful to him. Later that day, the group drives into New York where Gatsby and Tom argue about whom Daisy is in love with. After a heated battle, Daisy chooses Tom and the weary group heads home.
             As Nick, Jordan, and Tom pass through the valley of ashes they discover that Gatsby's car has hit and killed Myrtle, Tom's lover.
