They Earn While They Learn

Clothes, accessories, parties, fast foods and fun - the trademark needs of a 'hep' and trendy college kid! But in a world where costs are high and nothing is free, where's the much needed 'moolah' to come from? Simple. Take recourse in that much derided, oft laughed at four-letter word - WORK. .
Not just during the summers and vacations, but all through the year, in a regular job that leaves enough time for an education. After all, as the old saying goes, hard work hasn't killed anyone, yet. Besides, whether we like it or not, most academic courses these days are designed to occupy one for about four hours a day, leaving enough time to rake in some dough. Unless one happens to be a Science student. .
Chetan Wadekar, an ex-student of Sathaye College who had to eventually give up his job, because his work timings clashed with that of his practicals and lectures, says, "It is easier for students of Arts and Commerce faculties to work along with their studies. Science subjects are more demanding and take up more time." But then, where there's a will, there's got to be a way. Right? Manjari Sharma, a student of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey's College of Home Science who is majoring in photography and freelances as a photographer agrees. .
"Despite a full time academic course and my responsibilities as the president of the Student's Council, I still make time to work. It enriches my career prospects, making the effort worthwhile." For students who can spare the time, the rewards of working are tremendous. Adelbert Menezes, a receptionist at a gym and a student at St Xavier's college says almost gleefully, "Parents usually expect good results against the pocket money they dole out. .
We don't have to account because our parents know that we can look after ourselves. At the same time, it is a myth that working students suffer at their studies," says Adelbert, proud at having performed far better in his papers than his non-working counterparts.
