"When Eartha Kitt salaciously sings "Santa Baby,"" does that really mean that she wants to sleep with Santa Claus?- This sort of statement is meant to be a conversation-stopper, like "Elvis's pelvis."" You know: Dostoyevsky, Eartha Kitt, Shyne Barrow "artists all, and liable to be misunderstood by the conservative and hung-up- (Nordlinger 621). Do any of these artists really mean what they are saying? No, it is just another set of words being sang, which is exactly what it is meant to be taken as.
Another part of the rap industry that angers people are the gun violences stated in many songs. They believe that the gun-control activists are ignoring this issue just like they did the Sean Combs case. The fact of the matter is that many rappers do have songs featuring in depth stories of gun violence. These rappers are simply stating what went on in their everyday lives as they grew up in the ghetto of urban cities. The lyrics that they rhyme over are not meant for people to take offense to, but to simply see what is going on in their reality. Rap is nothing but life stories described in a musical form. Many rap artists still have a thug mentality to them because that is their way of life. Some still carry guns on them, since they are famous and all, they are more prone to attacks from being in the spotlight; they want protection, just like any other person that may own a rifle or gun in their home. The reason that this is such an issue is because of the image the rap artists portray to some people, as if they are a menace to society, when all they are doing is making a living from their art and nothing more.
The whole issue with gun violence leads to separating violence in music from the way people act in everyday life. Just because a person may see Mark Paul Gosselar, on television shoot somebody in NYPD Blue for instance, does that mean that Mark is actually going to shoot someone off set, in his actual real life? No, it is strictly entertainment.
