The relational goals of both parties also change during this conflict. At the beginning of the conflict, Fiona's relational goals where that Will was a slimy, rich, middle aged man that was taking advantage of her son. She did not care about him or how she treated him because her only relationship to Will was through what she knew of him from her son. Will saw Fiona in the same kind of way; she was the crazy mother of Marcus who did not do a very good job of parenting. After Fiona started the accusations, Will's relational goals immediately changed. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with Fiona or Marcus and saw that it was more trouble than good. He wanted to show her the same: that he did not care about her and did not care if he offended her. Will getting out of his seat, blew up at Fiona telling her how she is not there for Marcus and does not know the trouble's in his life. He let them know that he would be glad to be rid of Marcus all together. That is when Fiona's relational goals change. She now sees that Will could be right, maybe he is an important person in Marcus's life right now. She then sits down next to Will and asks, "So that's it?" meaning, are you just going to forget about Marcus that easily. Now she wanted him to take some responsibility in seeing what an impact he has made in Marcus's life and that he has to stick with it. She now saw Will as a friend of her son who should be treated more respectfully and needed to stay a part of her life for her son's sake. Will's relational goals did not change by the end of the conflict. He was still very confused. One minute he was getting accused of being indecent and then he was supposed to keep doing what he was just accused of. He still just saw Fiona as a crazy mother whose son was a little weird himself.
