Essay Title: Compare or contrast any two characters in Molie

Simply making a positive judgment of a person's personality based on his or her outlook can also affect one's life deeply. This is what happened to Orgon and Tartuffe. Tartuffe appears to Orgon to be a good, reputable, and pious man. His use of religion to manipulate Orgon is consistent throughout the play, and Orgon is blind to the truth about Tartuffe's character. Tartuffe takes advantage of this blindness and attempts to seduce his wife and con Orgon out of all of his possessions. He uses holiness and purity as tools of sin to commit immoral acts. Nonetheless, Tartuffe appears to be eloquent and dignified in this play.
Orgon is stubborn and hot-headed. He looks upon Tartuffe as a high holy figure, who is admirable because of his devotion to God. He is so eager to believe in Tartuffe that he is the primary victim Tartuffe uses to control the entire family. Orgon never once expresses concern or sympathy for the members of his household. For example, when Dorinne, the maid, tried repeatedly to tell Orgon about his wife's illness, he changes the subject immediately to Tartuffe "Orgon repeats, "Ah, and Tartuffe?" In contrast, Tartuffe has been eating lavishly, sleeping loudly, and drinking wine heavily. Furthermore, Orgon himself even admits openly to Tartuffe that he would not care of feel pain if his wife were to die. "My mother, children, brother, and wife could die, and I'd not fee la single moment's pain" (p.25). He calls Tartuffe brother, and loves him as he loves himself, preferring Tartuffe to his own mother, child, or wife. The blindness of Orgon therefore takes from him the human sympathy he once had as a loving husband and father.
Orgon sacrifices his own children because of his lack of vision. For instance, in Marianne's situation, he decides to marry his daughter off to Tartuffe, which also breaks his promise of Marianne's engagement to Valere. Orgon uses his paternal power to force the decision on his daughter.
