Explain how Linguistic Choices Affect the Representation of

"The news format [was] a source of public information, especially at that time, [that] people had come to trust- (Eldridge, Chp 13). Now I think that the public would be a lot more discerning should a broadcast like the above was read today, it would probably have to be heard on the TV and in the papers before it might possibly be taken seriously.
I am going to look at an article from the Daily Express, on the pop star', Janet Jackson. Like most other celebrities who are in the public eye, much is written about them be it good or bad, true or not so true. I will look at how this particular article uses a lot a negative words, threats', betray', cruel' etc, which would already influence your perception of the whole article and also catches the reader's eye and make them want to read the rest of the story. The biggest presupposition the paper makes, of course, is that we will want to read about Janet Jackson. .
"The $25million threats of the man with Janet Jackson's future in his hands-.
I will look at the linguistic choices used regarding the above headline, also used to create the article. I will look at the influence the media has on it's readers and how their Representation influences our perception. I will also be looking at how the article is not just about Janet Jackson and Rene Elizondo, but how it is also about Janet Jackson the relationships she has with her family and from her past.
The extraposition, in the headline, of putting the money first, $25m, gives the impression that this is probably more important than the breakdown of the marriage. It also presupposes that everyone knows who Janet Jackson, that we knew she was married and that we would not recognise the name of the man involved. They have also managed to make it sound much more sinister by using this term man' rather than his name. The main picture also ties in nicely with in his hands'. Obviously, we do not know just by reading the headline and looking at the picture whose hands they are, but ironically, they belong to Rene Elizondo.
