com 1). Obesity is everywhere. It is seen in children as young as two, and causes almost as many deaths every year as smoking related illnesses (Groppe 1). Many researchers think that it is caused by the amount of physical labor that is performed in our society. With the rise of machinery as a labor force and many more Americans having desk jobs, more and more people are becoming obese because of a lack in their physical activity. Also, obesity is a great factor in causing many other fatal diseases. The surgeon general states that " obesity [is] associated with heart disease, certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke, arthritis, breathing problems, and psychological disorders, such as depression (Surgeon General 1). .
Obesity is a disease that has begun to plague world in the past few decades. In the United Kingdom, obesity in men has risen from slightly over five percent of the population in 1980 to almost fourteen percent when the study ended in 1991 (50plushealth 1). This alarming rate is also present and about equal in the United States. Recently, it was found that in every state in the nation beside Colorado, over 15 percent of the population is labeled obese (Groppe 1). This staggering percentage is believed to be caused by the stress of everyday life today and the fast-paced world that we live in. With more and more inventions and innovations that have come about, people are employed more as to push buttons and oversee than actually performing labor. Another reason that obesity is prevalent today is the amount of fast food businesses that have come about over the past 15 years. With places like McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King, emphasis is more toward speed of production instead of health issues. In a recent study done, these three restaurant's big sellers, which in most cases are hamburgers, have all exceeded 300 calories, not including condiments (Diabetes123 1).
