On the vessel traveling back to the United States was a nightmare for the slaves, they had the men (young & old) changed to the left and right side rowing the boat every day without sleep and sometimes hardly any food. If one of them slacked off rowing the paddle, for their punishment they would receive from the captain an amputated leg or arm. The women and children would most likely be at another section of the boat scared and wondering in their minds why is this happening to them. Few weeks traveling through the sea was over, then came the arrival for the Africans to arrive on American soil of Virginia, slaves were largely treated as property to be freely bought and sold. It was a difficult time for the slaves; their families were being separated and being shipped to other states. About 700,000 slaves were starting to expand all over the states. When they arrived at their master's land, he gave his slaves their own names such as John Downey, James Wilson. The slave owner has these dirty, rotten shacks for his slaves to live for the rest of their lives. They have the men working in the plantation fields, while the women work inside the house serving the white folks. The women suffered dearly especially the younger girls because the slave owners adducted one girl from the shacks and rape them sadly and after they get pregnant from their masters.

There was one young slave that made headlines about being pregnant by Thomas Jefferson and her self and her name was Sally Hemings, born in 1773 in the state of Virginia, a slave of African and European descent; Hemings, along with her mother and siblings, moved to Monticello where Thomas Jefferson lives. When Hemings arrived as a child and a young teenager, Hemings performed duties for Jefferson as a servant. Jefferson served as the American minister to France in 1784. He missed his daughter, Mary and wanted her to come to Paris in the summer in 1787, Sally accompanied Mary to live in Paris for the next two years, while sally's brother served as Jefferson personal servant.
