Heart of Darkness

Without the implementation of rules in society, life would be hectic. Humans are evil and this evilness is hidden by society's laws. Greediness and the materialistic nature of human beings results in evil actions. In the short story, "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad, the dark heart of mankind is revealed.
Marlow encounters the dark side during his trip to Africa. At the beginning of the story Marlow introduces his journey by saying, "this has been one of the dark places of the earth." He is foreshadowing his terrible experience of corruption, power-hunger, and dark reality. An example is the ivory company that " [is] reckless without hardihood, greedy without audacity, and cruel without courage." The people that run the ivory company only care about profit. They do not care who they have to step on in order to attain what they seek. Also, when Marlow arrives at Central Station he realizes that the White men are cruel , they treat the Blacks poorly and exploit them. Since nobody is there to watch over them, the Whites unjustly break "unspoken" rules. Lastly, towards the end of the story Marlow realizes that Kurtz exploit's the savages for his own benefit. Marlow has been under the impression that Kurtz is an honest man. Once he sees that he too is corrupt, he loses hope on mankind. These people are immoral because the are driven by materialism. .
There are many example in which humans make dishonest choices because they inherit a corrupt nature. For example, when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America his intention were bad. He stole, lied, and killed many Indians in order to get goods and land. Also, the reasons for Civil War were not the right ones. The people in the North sought war because the were afraid that the South would have an advantage economically and politically. History has proven that the North did not care that humans were being treated worse than wild animals, they were just in it for the competition.
