Hunger as ideology means the philosophy or principles behind the thought of food. The idea of hunger is "ok" is what the article means. Many people believe that being skinny is how one should be; therefore one should not eat so one can be skinny. These thoughts are brought up because in our society today, the norm is to be skinny so one can look beautiful. A person who is skinny does not necessarily mean that they are healthy. One can be normal weight and be healthier than a person who weighs how much the society might think that one should weigh to look "normal". I believe that Susan Bordo titled her article "Hunger as Ideology" for the reason that she also believes that many people think not eating to look beautiful or normal is "ok" in their minds. .
Some people that are in the business of selling either diet foods or exercise equipment know that women will pay attention to their advertisement. "Advertisers are aware, too, of more specific ways in which women's lives are out of control, including our well-documented food disorders; they frequently incorporate the theme of food obsessions into their pitch. The Sugar Fee Jell-O Pudding campaign exemplifies a typical commercial strategy for exploiting women's" eating problems while obscuring their dark realities (Bordo 105). Bordo here explains how even food companies know that women will fall into the trap of our society telling them that they are in need of a diet, while in truth that is not the case. Women will fall for anyone who tells them that they need to lose weight, so they will believe the commercials. For one to think that not eating is ok will lead to many problems. To believe the theory to not eat will make one look beautiful is an awful obsession that will lead to many troubles in one's life. People need to realize in order to be healthy, one needs to eat and exercise at the same time. .
