In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty- Four, the Party brainwashes and controls its people with three illogical slogans: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. Due to the influence of these three irrational slogans, Winston is forced to live only to serve the Party and is never allowed to do whatever he wishes. .
Under the influence of the slogan, WAR IS PEACE, Winston is forced to believe that in order to have peace, war and all its sacrifices are needed. In Oceania, the Party lies about there being a war going on. Thus, the Party wants the people to be aware of wars and be ready to fight against the enemy whenever necessary. Consequently, the Party can control people by putting them in the position of having a war. In addition, the Party constantly reminds the citizens its rivalries in order to make them understand that there are always people who are wanting to occupy the country of Oceania. In order to prevent people from overthrowing the Party, whomever the government considers to be committing suspicious acts will then be vaporized. In other words, he or she will be destroyed by the Party and is never to be found again. Thus, these factors made Winston never dared to question the Party for he is afraid that he will become the next person to be vaporized.
The second slogan, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, has caused Winston to become a true slave of the Party and not being able to have any freedom in his life. The Thought Police surveils people in Oceania by having a helicopter skimming down between the roofs and looking into people's windows. However, the Proles in Oceania receives much more freedom than others because the Party is aware of the fact that they do not care about the government. The Party realizes that the Proles never wish to involve themselves into troubles with the government. As a result, they receive much more freedom for they never have thoughts relating to overthrowing the Party.
