The Cold War

 

            
             Kennedy's administration, the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) came very close to a nuclear war with the Cuban Missile Crisis, this was the most dangerous state of the Cold War. In this paper I will attempt to give a clear understanding of the Cold War. I will answer many questions, such as: What was the Cold War? What caused the tension between the U.S. and the USSR? And finally, how were these problems solved. .
             The cold war is a term used to describe the approximate forty-year "battle". The war started when the U.S. and Soviet Union were both considered super powers. They didn't trust each other since each countries government was different; they thought their government systems were sufficient for themselves, and other countries all over the world. Although direct military conflict never took place between the two, diplomatic and economic struggles occurred. .
             The Cold War began when the leader of the Communist Party, Joseph Stalin, used the Red Army to take control of most of the countries of Eastern Europe. The United States as well as Western European countries were greatly concerned. In response to Stalin's military movements, President Harry Truman issued the Truman Doctrine in 1947. President Truman asked that the United States aid any country that asked for help in resisting communism. This was known as the policy to keep communism from spreading to other countries. .
             "Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East. We must take immediate and resolute action. I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of $400,000,000 for the period ending June 30, 1948. In requesting these funds, I have taken into consideration the maximum amount of relief assistance which would be furnished to Greece out of the $350,000,000 which I recently requested that the Congress authorize for the prevention of starvation and suffering in countries devastated by the war.
