Ecstasy laws should be minimized by legalizing the use of Ecstasy for its theraputical purposes in order to reduce the dangers involved with this substance. Ecstasy also known as methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA is a man made synthesized substance that produces a euphoric and empathetic type of feeling when ingested. Once in the body it starts to work on the part of the brain that controls serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that is produced by the human body in order to control mood and body temperature. Once MDMA reaches the brain it forces the brain cells that produce serotonin to release all of serotonin located inside that cell. Once the serotonin is released completely MDMA blocks the cells from trying to absorb the extra serotonin. This is known as reuptake. That is the reason the user feels great empathetic feelings, and is overwhelmed with euphoria. Although MDMA is today's most used drug it was invented for a totally different purpose. On Christmas Eve of 1912 a pharmaceutical company by the name Merck filed for a patent as a precursor to a drug that they hoped would be effective in the control of bleeding. In 1953 the U.S Army started conducting tests on animals with MDMA and other structurally related drugs. Most likely they were seeking new chemical weapons or new interrogation tools. These tests are the first known evidence that MDMA was psychoactive. In 1965 a chemist by the name of Alexander Shulgin synthesized MDMA predicting that it was psychoactive. At this point he did not try the substance on himself. In 1967 a student at the University of California reported to Shulgin that he had tried MDMA. Shulgin then tried the drug himself and was totally amazed by the substance. After his first experience with MDMA Shulgin stated what he felt after taking 120 milligrams of the substance. "I feel absolutely clean inside, and there .
