The Great American Dream - The Great Gatsby

We stray from these morals, trading freedoms for lives of decadence.
Today immigrants enter a land of rigid immigration laws, such as the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, that espouse racist and white supremacist ideas. The bigots of our society believe immigration will lead to the racial degradation of American stock. It is they who have the power to grasp their dreams that impede immigrant's aspirations, corrupting the dream. .
Though it may be commonplace to see white people attend a jazz concert with Negro performers or even see modish Negro bucks being chauffeured around by one of us, they are far from accepted. The Harlem Renaissance recognises the cultural capability these people possess, however corrupters of the dream are too selfish to share the stage with Negroes as their power will be diminished. They are resented for their talents. They are not embraced. They are merely tolerated. .
Even within our own race there is inequality. Despite their new found freedoms, in reality our women are still just ornaments. Flappers try to appear outwardly liberated, but inside, in spite of their new found freedoms, they are bored rigid, they have fallen victim to restrictions and are not accepted unless on the arm of a man. Their liberation causes condemnation. Their equality merely diminishes their femininity. Their freedom is a fazade. Is this the way we want the women of our society to be represented? These are women who are intelligent, women who have talent and who are capable of participating in society. Our rejection of their liberation is unfounded, yet another example of the futility of the dream's pursuit.
Where is the equality in all of this I ask you? Were not all created equal? Power sits with the wealthy. However it is we who are born into wealth, who do not have to work for the dream, which possess the greatest share. The nouveau riche, who work for their wealth are constantly taken advantage of and judged.
