Right upon arrival to America, John Smith already had trouble awaiting him. For .
example, he was immediately captured by Indians and then threatened with death by their .
leader, Powhatten. This shows that Smith was an extremely courageous man because .
even after going through such a dangerous event, he remained in America and continued .
to explore. Because he had such an intense hunger for knowledge, he would not let .
anything hinder him from accomplishing his dream of journeying across America. In .
addition to the fearful incident with the Indians, he was also severely burned in an .
explosion in 1609,which caused him to return back home to England. This shows that .
Smith was a very strong-willed man, because only five years later, he returned to .
