Homer's Odyssey vs. Space Jam

 

            
             Even though most people would consider stories such as The Odyssey as a hero's journey and an epic, many modern-day stories can also be regarded the same. A simple movie such as Space Jam is a perfect example of a modern-day epic and heroic journey. It follows traditional epic characteristics and the layout is very similar to a mythological story such as The Odyssey.
             One may believe that the simple children's movie Space Jam is an example of an epic. It follows the traditional contents of classic epics and tells about a hero's journey. In this movie, Michael Jordan is considered the hero because he saves the Loony Tunes from being captured by the aliens. .
             Though Space Jam is a simple movie, the author might have used a complex epic such as The Odyssey as the building blocks of the story. It contains the six traditional characteristics of most epics. The movie begins in the middle of the action when Michael Jordan is asked to play on a basketball team with the Loony Tunes in a game against the aliens of Moron Mountain. The author of the movie expects the audience to know the national importance of Michael Jordan and his success in the sport of basketball. The movie takes place in the world of cartoons, which is definitely beyond the world of human beings. This story also involves supernatural powers. The unathletic aliens of Moron Mountain are trying to get the Loony Tunes to be slaves at their theme park to attract bigger crowds. When the Loony Tunes challenge them to a game of basketball, the aliens use their supernatural powers to put NBA players" talents into their own bodies, making them fierce competitors against the Loony Tunes. The main action in Space Jam is during the big game between the Loony Tunes and the Monstars (the alien's basketball team) .
             when Michael Jordan has to save the Loony Tunes from being taken to Moron Mountain. Also, this story is in third person perspective and shows the views of the aliens and the views of the Loony Tunes and Michael.
