A long time ago, there was a flock of seagulls. This flock was very big, and al of the seagulls lived by the rules of the flock's elders. The ordinary seagulls never think about the quality of their flight, as they fly only to get food. Among those thousands of seagulls there was a special one, his name is Jonathan Livingston Seagull. .
very brave, he was not afraid of the response of the flock and his parents to his norm-breaking behavior. He practiced around the clock, all by himself. There were times he didn't succeed in completing correctly one of his tricks. Those time was bad for his faith in his theory about the flight, because he was thinking that maybe everybody is right, that he shouldn't think to much about flying and that he better act like every other good and loyal member of the flock. But eventually he never gave up until he had done the trick as he pleased, and then he was happy. One morning, after he finally succeeded in doing a very difficult flying-trick, Jonathan had been called to the center of the flock's circle gathering.

flock's tradition and rules. Jonathan tried to explain them that a seagull's life is more than just a surviving-story, but they all ignored him, by the order of the elders. His heart was broken, so he left the flock to spend the rest of his life in learning as much as possible about his flight. Jonathan was sorry that he didn't make the rest of the seagulls in his former flock understand how important it is to be open-minded and not to accept what you had been told as obvious just because somebody, like the flock's elders, said so. As sad he was for leaving the only home he ever had, he never regretted the fact that this is the price he had paid to be free! That evening, while he was practicing, he suddenly met a couple of seagulls, shining and pure looking like the stars, .
