He sought to escape discrimination and persecution by oppressive government. Still he also hoped to escape famine. When he reached his new homes, he learned that his trouble had begun. He had to find housing and jobs in strange surroundings where he did not know the culture or language and unfamiliar with the monetary system. And so suffering, fearing, brooding and rejoicing, he cried alone. He lived in New York where the neighbors might be less friendly than people they had known.
