Unemployment, in his view, is not the responsibility of society, but only the person that is unemployed. Why should one person's income be taxed to pay for the man who had lost his job? According to Hospers" belief, if unemployment insurance were abolished then the rate of the unemployed would decrease since more people would be out trying to find a job in the work force rather then reaping the benefits of doing nothing.
Should a man who is working hard for his own money be responsible for the man who is ill and for his medical bills? Free medical care is a myth. Nothing is free in the world today. It is the law that everyone who earns an income must have some of their funds allocated to provide for services that everyone shares even though he may wish not to do so. The government shouldn't be able to lay claim to what you have worked for.
Hospers also takes the position that society as a whole shouldn't be responsible for another person's predicament. In no way should the government intervene and make such laws that supposedly benefit society, that are against the will of the individual. Freewill should be exactly what it is stated to be. The term, freewill, should be taken in the most literally in the vocabulary of the Libertarians, except, when one person's freewill intervenes with another. .
Hoppers views although ridged are not completely wrong as some of his ideas are more compassionate then what our Country offers now. No one is completely right or wrong. It is the bending of our different opinions that help better our society.
John Hospers is an American citizen, and perhaps his views reflect American society which are much different then their Canadian neighbors. Our two countries are so enormously divided in so many of the views that we take on different issues, from free Medicare, unemployment, to issues on gay rights. So I can't say if the views that he gives are valid or correct.
