Candide

 

Candide then escapes the war and flees to Holland under the impression of fellow Christian aid and yet he receives none. Fortune then strikes when he meets his old tutor Pangloss in a miserable state. A new character then appears, the Anabaptist, which means someone who is not baptized and/or against it. The Anabaptist has Pangloss healed and employed and then sets out to Lisbon where on the ship turbulence strikes and the Anabaptist is struck overboard. When reaching land, Pangloss and Candide having survived shipwreck, where then arrested under capital offence and flogging took place for Candide and hanging for Pangloss. .
             In the following chapters until around chapter twelve it covers Candide's reuniting with Cunegonde and a new character is introduced, the old woman. The end of chapter six an old woman has Candide follow her to a hut. In this hut she cares for him and heals his flogging wounds. Later she reunites Candide and Cunegonde at a house with a moat or canal around it. He learns of the war reaching the baron's manor and of the hardships of Cunegonde. Don Issachar, and the Inquisitor were introduced in her telling of hardships and shortly after appeared and both were killed by Candide. They fled and soon traveled to South America with military troops on a boat because of Candide's ability to impress a commander with his military knowledge. Next the old woman tells her tale of hardships in life and civil war she witnessed while in the Middle East. The boat reaches Buenos Aires and in chapter thirteen a new character Cacambo is introduced and becomes a servant to Candide. There was war in the new world as well and Cacambo advised Candide to return to Europe .
             Chapters seventeen through twenty six speak of travels from El Dorado to Surinam to France to England and then to Venice. The gold of El Dorado was the main sight of Candide and wealth came to them which brought a pleasant feeling to Cacambo and Candide.
