Spike Lee is Mookie, the delivary boy of Sal's pizzeria. He is a normal guy that does not seems to care about anything except his money: "The first-and-last time we see him, he is counting his money."(1) Mookie has a big role in the film, under his appearance of a normal guy he seems to see what is going on in the mind of the people. He was the only one who stayed calm until the end. "Mookie is the movie's pivotal figure, the one who finally expresses his rage and frustration in a single, decisive but confused act that touches off a riot and destroys Sal's Famous."(1) I think one of the reason for this act is the fact that this pizzeria was the cause for this violence and he wanted to clean it from the street. According to me being the black delivary boy of a white man also dropped the tension for a short period of time. Sometimes his black brothers did not forget to remind him that he is black too. We do not know why but Da Mayor tells him to do the right thing, always. Maybe he wanted him to take his responsabilities or to be more concerned about what was going on in that street. Did Mookie do the right thing?.
According to me, in the movie, no one was able to do the right thing except for Mookie and Da Mayor. The lack of communication between Sal and the black community led to violence. They have already decided who are their friends and who are not, without even trying to understand each other. If we ask each one of them it is for sure that he or her will say I did the right thing. The title of the movie is trying to open our eyes and to wake up us. It makes us realize that with violence we can go nowhere, that we should learn to accept others differencies, and try to live with them in harmony. If Radio Raheem did not provoke Sal maybe he would not break his radio. If only they would have done the right thing! If we think, Radio Raheem died for nothing and the policemen went to far.
