New immigration

The "new immigration" is a large number of immigrants coming to the states and creating a large diversity in America's race, ethnicity, language, and culture. This challenging of the White European traditions is often causing division and enmity. The "new immigration" has resulted in a large number of U.S. residents that are foreign born. Minorities are now becoming the majority, whereas the majority is starting to become the minority. Due to the large number of immigrants moving to the States, America has been known as the "melting pot". Although this can help Americans become open-minded and aware of other cultures, there are several consequences of the "new immigration".
One concern of the "new immigration" is that these immigrants are taking jobs from the U.S. citizens. These immigrants have the most effect on the low wage American workers. As more and more immigrants come in with little to no skills in the workforce, they are searching for the low-wage jobs, causing the low wage workers to receive even less in their paychecks. Eventually, it is predicted that federal and state governments will no longer provide welfare to the legal immigrants and non-immigrants, which only means that more workers will be competing for very few low-level jobs.
Another consequence is that the immigrants can be a drain to the society. Immigrants are more likely to need more and more of non-immigrants tax money. Immigrants coming to America tend to have larger families whose children will be attending public schools, paid for by tax money. Also, because the immigrants are working the low wage jobs, they are paying less taxes yet receiving more benefits.
The possible rising of tension between different races and ethnic groups is another worry of the "new immigration". As the number of non-whites increases, so does the fear of those who have been already settled here. This can be upsetting to the whites because immigrants tend to "cluster" in certain areas, causing taxes to rise and the value of their home to decrease.
