Mavis goes to Timor

Mavis goes to Timor was performed outdoors under the trees and stars. The performance space was flexible, and framed by a series of actual shipping containers, which provided various performance levels. These could be opened to reveal rooms such as Mavis's bedroom in Dili or her shop in Yarrawonga, as well as being the container, which was packed to go to Dili. On one side of the space was Mavis's living room, on the other a sandy area for the choir and musicians. The roofs on the containers were used for some of the Dili scenes.
To many people, Mavis Taylor was seen, as frail, old and nave. To others she was portrayed as a hero, one individual.
Who made an immense discrepancy on the entire group of East Timorese society, particularly the women. .
From the beginning of this performance I could see it was going to be a deeply emotional story line. Being it set outside I could see that it gave the story a more realistic feeling. It basically starts off with Mavis celebrating her 86th birthday with her 27 grand children , 28 great grandchildren and her daughter, Elwyn. When they all learn that Mavis has decided to go to East Timor, to help the women bring in some income, of course no one is happy at all, in particular 48 yr old Elwyn. Later towards the evening 1 of her grandchildren, Anita ( Elwyns daughter) rings to wish her a happy birthday, and also asks if she can go along on the trip. .
