How Did WW1 Help Change the Way Women are Portrayed Today?

WW1 brought many meaningful changes to the home front. While the fighting of war went on Canada was changing fast and drastically. This war would help out women in Canada for years to come. The politics were changing, women's social roles were increasing and becoming better and economics was booming. All of this would change Canada for a lifetime.
While economic was changing so was the women's roles during WW1. This drastically changed the way women are looked at and treated in the work place today. While all the men and few women were overseas either fighting in the war or just helping out hurt and wounded. It was necessary for the women no over seas to help out in not just the homes. (Frances 1998) states often took the jobs that were traditionally considered "men's" work. Rather then just working at the home most women started to take over such jobs as gas jockeys, street car conductors, they worked in banks and in insurance firms. I think that the women during this time were treated unfairly because if the government needed them to work the same jobs as men and thought they could do it why not pay them the same amount as what the men had earned. All working the same long hours doing the same back breaking work as men all for less then what the men received. Women were needed to help run the farms, to build the aircrafts and ships used in the what. They would raise money by doing different little shows and using all the money they raised to buy different supplies to send to the men over seas at war.
While early on in the twentieth century the political power was divided but all would change all because of war. (Frances 1998) states "how could the Canadian government preserve democracy with at the same time respond to the emergencies of war? This would be one of the questions the parliament would ask its self but would quickly find a solution with the War Measures act. This act would help the federal cabinet to act quickly and studiously if an emergency should come up.
