Non-verbal communications on foreign language teaching

.
About this issue, I have had an interview with 25 students in Shanghai Jiaotong University. I asked them to think about the importance of nonverbal communication of English teachers use in class. Here is the result:.
18 students 72% Of great importance, help them to learn English a lot.
6 students 24% Of importance, help them to learn English to some extent.
1 student 4% Of little importance. It is not necessary for teachers to use.
So from this, we can know that nonverbal communication plays a very important role in teaching. And in my opinion, in the environment of the class, the non-verbal communication can have some special supplementary functions. It includes,.
             1. When the teacher explains some cultural background of the western countries or about the text, he can use nonverbal communications to present. By doing this, he can explain the difference between Chinese culture and western culture clearly. For example, in teaching the customs of shaking hands in the western countries, the teacher can present it to the class when he explains it. Such a way of teaching, first the teacher sets an example, and then, the students practice, can help the students to understand it and master the knowledge. .
             2. Nonverbal communication can help the teacher to organize the teaching process. For instance, in spoken English class, the teacher often uses silence or change of the tone to indicate that he finishes his talk and the student can answer.
             3. Nonverbal communications can help the teacher control the whole class. Teachers can use them to encourage the good performance of the students and also restrain their bad deeds. For example, they can use the eye contact or gesture to prevent them from violating the class discipline. For example, to encourage the students to take part in the English speeches or other language practice, the teacher can ask the students to sit in a half-circle and he also joins in the students instead of sitting on the platform.
