Topic: Race and Gender in American Culture.
My Subject for this essay is Kurt B. Kurt is a sophomore here at The University at buffalo and is majoring in aerospace engineering. Kurt is also one of my team mates on the Bulls swim team. I chose Kurt because of his strong knowledge of what race and gender mean to him personally in American culture and also for his strong German heritage and background. Kurt is also a bright student and dedicated and motivated athlete. Kurt is from a small town called Mexico in New York and came to UB to experience a top class education and also to pursue his swimming. The next few paragraphs are Kurt's responses to questions asked by me regarding race and gender from his personal point of few as an American and a little bit from his German background. All information is based on personal experience or opinions. .
Kurt's definition of race is the regional origin of an individual's family. I also learnt that there are more than a number of races here in the United States. I having grown up in India where discrimination between different types of races exists to the maximum amounts was curious to know if there was any discrimination here in the United States. According to Kurt, in the past there was discrimination between different races which went in one direction to make good, but instead backfired and went in the opposite direction and continued since. There have been many attempts to repair the past but all attempts have gone in vain or have caused more disadvantages. For example, Good smart white kids cannot get into college because of an act set by the University for Reservation of seats for other minorities and races. This is not the case only with whites, but for all other classes as well. Black, white, yellow or blue should go to college because of how smart or successful you are and not for any other reasons. Discrimination between races is also present in the job markets around the United States.
