Analysis of a sequence from

Romance films often show a male and female character arguing, or hating each other, then later making romantic connections, e.g. When Harry Met Sally. This sequence between Delilah and Casey leads us as the audience to expect a romantic connection and a possible resolve of the equilibrium through these two characters.
This scene changes to display clear horror conventions in shot 4, illustrating the extreme hybridisation seen in teen pics. The slow, romantic music stops and there is a second of silence. This creates suspense in the scene, and changes to typical horror music. The movement of the camera and the actors speeds up and creates a faster pace. This mirrors the adrenaline of the characters and creates an atmosphere of fear. When Casey and Delilah go into the cupboard, the teacher and coach enter the staffroom in shot 11. This shot is in slow motion and not only creates suspense, but slows down the pace of the scene, especially in contrast with the previous shots. .

Here the narrative is elaborated and it is clear to the audience that the coach and the teacher are the antagonists. Neither the teacher nor the coach are smiling, suggesting they are not friendly. The coach crushes the plastic water cone and this shows him as menacing. The teacher is dressed all in black, has a pale face, and dark eye make-up. This makes her appear very sinister. The coach is dressed tidily and, although there is nothing menacing about his costume, we can compare this to the earlier narrative. The coach in the opening scene is wearing clothes that we associate with a coach (a whistle, trainers, sports clothes) and he is sweaty with messy hair. The teacher was shown in the first scenes wearing light, colourful clothes and make-up, glasses and with messy hair. In this scene, after their alien transformation, we can see the comparisons. .
It's clear that the aliens aim is to create a society of perfection, shown in the tidy clothes and hair, and the calm behaviour (before the coach was angry and aggressive, the teacher was jittery and nervous).
