Love and war can have many effects on a person. In the novel A Farewell to Arms written by Earnest Hemingway the central character is a young man by the name of Frederic Henry. Fredric is effected by love and war and this causes him to change quite a bit. The novel takes place in Italy during the First World War. Frederic is an american and is an ambulance driver. During the course of the war, Frederic experiences love and war, which are just a few aspects that can cause change. Love can make a person softer, more caring, but it can also make a person selfish. Love can change a person's personality. Frederic is brave, and is motivated. Bravery is something not a lot of people have but Frederic shows his bravery through some tough times.
Every aspect of life either kills us or makes us stronger. Frederic is a very brave person, but has been fooled to think that he is unstoppable. Frederic takes a change on love, not knowing what will happen. Frederic tries to make a move on this nurse, Catherine, which shows some bravery. What kind of person will make a move on a woman when they do not now each other well. This man would have to be brave. Frederic makes his move and she slaps him in the face. Bravery is not always rewarded. Love effects how brave Frederic allows himself to be, and it is not likely he will be so bold again before he gets to know a woman better. War can also effect how brave some people be. Frederic is wounded and is unable to move. He is rushed to the hospital tent on the front line. Frederic's bravery takes over and he insists that someone with more serious injuries is seen to first. Not all acts of bravery is rewarded, but this act is. Frederic is to be rewarded the silver medal. The war makes Frederic realize that bravery is something that takes over when it needs to. War and love can effect how much bravery a person has. In a time of need, bravery will shine through.
