People immigrate to North America in search of freedom, where one can seek refuge and practice their respected or disputed religion without having to fear death. America is a "promise land." America means success .
In my mother's case she was to flee to America in order to escape a mass murdering government. Her father, my grandfather was in the ranks of the Ethiopian military and decided it was most wise to flee the country before the rebels overthrew the dictator. The rest is history. My family would learn multiple languages and stay in multiple countries in Africa for four years before finally escaping to an over illustrated "promise land." That place being America. .
I come into play in 1985, I was born in Fortwayne, Indiana when my mother was only 18 years old. To have a child at 18 wasn't out of the ordinary for Ethiopians but my mother would soon learn that having a child in America at such a young age was to be the biggest roadblock of all in her strives to become successful. Other problems that lay in her way of living a moderately normal life were her troubles with the English language and still having to maintain good enough grades to graduate high school. My mom and family were able to overcome all of the hurdles that lay in their paths way and all now live lower middle class lives. Happy lives. After living such a dramatic life, in the end my mother is able to provide for myself and my 3 brothers more than adequately. .
But because my mother did not get to live a normal childhood and had to endure hardships at such a young age, it has driven her to make sure she can provide for her family and also make sure we receive the finest education possible. I have been in advanced courses and accelerated classes all of my life and have been guided towards having an outstanding transcript come time for college. But as we all know, things do not always turn out as expected.
