In addition, Religion has been a major force in the shaping of Roman history, politically as much as socially. From the Pantheon to St. Peter's, the majority of sights in Rome are or were connected with religion. On July 22nd 2002, we took early morning flight from Indianapolis Airport to Rome and had a flight connection in Newark. The total duration, including the wait in Newark was 8 hours. We reached Rome Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport at about 10.15am and exchanged dollars for euros at a rate of 1.08 dollars for one euro (rate at that time). This was the currency we were going to be using for our entire trip in Europe.
The climate of Italy is highly diversified, with extremes ranging from frigid, in the higher elevations of the Alps and Apennines, to semitropical along the coast of the Ligurian Sea and the western coast of the lower peninsula. The climate in Rome is generally pleasant; warm and sunny in spring and autumn, although sunstroke and heat exhaustion can be a serious threat in mid-summer. November can bring rain to Rome and winters are generally mild, though cold spells can occur.
Christianity & Catholicism has been big in Rome and this could be seen with the number of churches and religious monuments we saw on our way to the hotel. It was sunny and really hot, but we were enjoying it. After we checked into the Hotel Ambasciatori Palace, we took our own small little tour. Since my friends and I were tired, we just wanted to relax and look around, so we wandered around the nearby Borghese Park where we could see everything from old villas to statuary, to a small lake, to the stunning Borghese Gallery. This gallery consisted of original sculptures and paintings that date back to Cardinal Scipione's collection, the son of Ortensia Borghese - Paolo V's sister - and of Francesco Caffarelli. The statue of Pauline Bonaparte, executed by Canova between 1805 and 1808, was of particular interest to me since I had learned about it in my Art Appreciation class at Indiana University.
