Modern day historians believe that Alfred wasn't sent to Rome but went with his father the king on a pilgrimage.
In the year 855, when Alfred was seven Edmund the greatest king of the East-Angles began his reign on the birthday of Alfred the Great. In the same year the pious emperor of Rome, Lewis Augustus died. Another great event that transpired during this year was when king Ethelwulf released the tenth part of his kingdom from all royal services and tribute. He did it with pen and offered it up to "God the One and the Three in One" for the redemption of his soul and his offspring.
King Ethelwulf died in the year 856 and was buried at Stemrugam. Ethelbald, Ethelwulf's son ascended his father's throne. He also, against God's law and both Christian and pagan customs ascended his father's bed by marrying his father's seconded wife Judith. Judith was the daughter of Charles, king of the Franks. Four years after he ascended the throne he died and was buried at Sherborne.
The next king to ascend the throne was Ethelbert Ethelbald's brother. When Ethelbert ascended the throne he did his part in expanding the kingdom by adding Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He rule over the kingdom for five years of peace. He ruled with love and respect for his subject. There was much sorrow when he "went the way of all flesh.".
When Alfred was eighteen years old in the year 866, another of his brothers came to the throne, Ethelred. Ethelred was the one who came to power next. He was in power for five years until he died. He died in battle or shortly after the battle with the pagans in the year 871. The battle with the pagans during the aforesaid year, was a great battle. The battle started in the year 870 when the pagans crossed through Mercia and into East-Anglia. After they came into East-Anglia king Edmund of the East-angles fought a fierce and mighty battle with them. During this battle king Edmund was slain and the pagans captured a victory.
