.
The plot of the story is that once confronted with a lion, Francis Macomber runs, thus revealing himself as a coward. Not only does this reality confront him directly, but it is obvious to his wife as well, which results in generating even more resentment and animosity. Francis is consumed with self-loathing because he was unable to face the lion, and in the end, he bravely confronts a raging bull. However, at the very last moment, Margot reaches for her gun and kills her husband. .
What is not clear in the story is whether or not she meant to do it, or if she was actually trying to kill the bull thinking that he would be unable to do it. Regardless, Francis dies, and although on the surface such an outcome may seem tragic, the reality is that he died a happy man. .
Francis Macomber's biggest battle in life was the battle he fought with himself. We see this evidenced throughout the story, and find many examples to support this thesis. The evidence may be divided amongst four claims:.
1. Francis" disgust with his own lack of courage.
2. The way other characters perceive Francis and his lack of courage.
3. Francis" actions in the face of danger.
4. His inability to conquer his fear despite the loathing it creates. .
For instance, from the beginning of the story Macomber's cowardice becomes apparent. When he is unable to kill the lion, he remarks to Wilson, "I bolted like a rabbit" . Macomber voices obvious disgust with himself, and this is just the first of many instances when both his cowardice and his embarrassment over such cowardice is revealed in his character. .
Furthermore, we see evidence of Francis" cowardice evidenced in the way other characters perceive him, thus enforcing the view that Francis must indeed deal with these issues personally. For instance, in the story both Wilson and Margot overtly think of Francis as a coward. .
"So, Robert Wilson thought to himself, she is giving him a ride, isn't she? Or do you suppose that's her idea of putting up a good show? How should a woman act when she discovers her husband is a bloody coward? She's damn cruel but they"re all cruel.
