Throughout history, the female gender has been looked down upon as the inferior of the sexes and denied their equal rights. This trend is present throughout the world in many forms of culture and religion. The Bible depicts Eve as the weaker of the sexes in the catholic book of beliefs. The Koran also displays a distasteful view of women as well. The Koranic attitude towards women is one of resentment and inequality. This is where the Islamic religion got their view that women are the lesser of the sexes, as we sometimes still see today in this rich and thriving religion.
In The Koran, Sura four is solely devoted to speaking out against women and showing that women are to be owned and controlled by man. There are several parts in this Sura, which could lead one to believe that women possess the rights equal to men, but the negative attitude outweighs the positive in many people's minds. Take these few lines in to context from this Sura: " Give orphans (girls) the property which belongs to them. Do not exchange their valuables for worthless things or cheat them of their possessions; for this would surely be a great sin. If you fear that you cannot treat orphans with fairness then you may marry other women who seem good for you: two, three, or four of them. But if you fear that you cannot maintain equality among them, marry one only or any of your slavegirls you may own. This will make it easier for you to avoid injustice" (The Koran 4: 1429). In the start of this excerpt, it seems to be stating that men should not cheat women of their possessions, and they should give them their equal rights. However, it takes a drastic twist when instructing men that they can marry two, three, or even four wives. This is degrading to women because it is showing that man can go out and have as many wives as he wants as long as he treats them equally. This policy is unfair and a practice that many believe negates the rights of women.
