Secession of the eleven southern states was the most awful event that took place around 1860 and 1861. The cause of this secession, to historians is unknown but in the essay it will be proven that slavery was one of the main issues in America that caused a disagreement between the north and south is slavery. Another is humanity and the economic differences. These disagreements are what adds the tension, which would finally lead to the Civil War.
Slavery in the North slavery was abolished but in the South they still looked at slavery as a way of life. Anyone who goes against slavery is thought of as a threat, for example, in (Doc 3), Pittsburg's newspaper makes accusations that Lincoln and his Republican party are trying to disunion the country. This shows that they want to make the north look bad and they are also afraid of the north taking over and turning the country into a non-slavery state. Abolitionist also threatened slavery, such as, William Lloyd Garrison who published the newspaper, "The Liberator", attacked southern slave owners. Making them and the slave traders out to be criminals. Another example of the south feeling like the north was a threat to their life is in (Doc 2), where Albert Gallatin shows that the south feels the north is corrupt and that they want to destroy the south.
Not only was feeling threatened an issues for the south but slavery was also, as mentioned in the beginning. In (Doc 1), it states the north and the south were at odds because of slavery and how one wanted and the other didn't. South thought of slavery as their property, which was very important to their cotton and farming production. The south also felt that they were being raided out like criminals by the Republicans, and Jefferson states that their reason for seceding was the built up tension caused by these raids. (Doc 7).
In (Doc 4) it shows that most of Lincoln's supporters are people who came from the free states.
