Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that men should be eligible for the draft age 21 and not 18. .
Central Idea: To explain the process of the draft, state why the age requirement should be 21, and provide possible plans of action. .
INTRODUCTION.
I. Imagine that all of the sudden you found out that you had to be whisked away from your family, sent to a training facility, and then sent off to fight in a war. Think of how you would feel knowing that you may never see your family and friends again or that you would never have the chance to go to college. IN the past, this has happened to young American men, and it can still happen to you (or your children) in the future. (Attention/Pathos).
II. In my survey, 83% of you said that the drafting age should remain 18, while 17% of you think it should be increased to 21. I"m going to try to persuade you that the draft age should be raised to 21. (Reveal Topic).
III. A draft would affect everyone in this room. The United States has been conflicting with the Middle East, and the draft may need to be reinstated someday. This means that any 18 year old boy in this room can be taken to war. If this occurred, we may never see our friends, or brothers, again. (Relevancy).
IV. I've always been very interested with the draft. When my grandpa was 20, he was drafted into the navy and remained with the military for seven years. He was forced to leave his family and my grandmother behind. (Credibility/ethos).
V. In my speech, I"m going to explain to you how the draft works, why I think 18 year olds are to young to take on the responsibilities of war, and provide possible plans of action. (Preview).
