As he starts writing his rebellious thoughts, he says "They'll shoot me I dont care theyll shoot me in the back of the neck I dont care down with big brother they always shoot you in the back of the neck I dont care down with big brother"(20) Since Big Brother has control over London, Winston feels extremely restrained in many aspects of life. He longs for a sexual experience and desperately wants to feel true and passionate emotions. Winston and Julia's relationship is absolutely forbidden and one may say that is the reason why Winston is drawn to her. In the quote, Winston displays emotions which the party would not be pleased with. The perfect world for the party members would be a totalitarianism society. Due to Winston's strong and rebellious thoughts about Big Brother, a completely conformed society would collapse. Totalitarianism is defined by dictionary.com by: of, or relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life. Unfortunately for the party, the towns member's aren't completely conformed. In most of the members of Eurasia, there are some rebellious thoughts that the government has no control over. The government may control what Winston eats, drinks, and what job he works at, but ultimately the government can't have power over his inner rebellion. Julia unleashes all of his inner rebel and renders the party's most important defense, doublethink, useless. When a person of society, doesn't use Doublethink, they can hold the key to the past and could take over government. The first step of Winston's insurrectionary actions, is when he writes Down with Big Brother over and over in his diary. This quote represents the key fact in this novel; can someone over rule society, or will their rebellious attitudes and violent nature be shunned? In addition, this quote also illustrates that society can't control what Winston believes and a conformed society wouldn't function.
