"How successful was the League in the 1920's?".

             • to improve the living and working conditions of people in all parts of the world.

             • to encourage nations to disarm.

             • to discourage aggression from any nation .

             • to encourage countries to co-operate, especially in business and trade.
During the 1920's the League of Nations was thought of as a relative success. However, upon thorough re-examination, it has been shown that the league may have had little to do with the sensation of the "roaring "20s". The league had set four objectives to be fulfilled. The objective that the league most fulfilled was that which stated "to improve living and working conditions". The league itself accomplished much to help people with the issues of transportation, refugees and illegal drug trading. The league also set up organizations that helped with large worldwide problems. These were the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Health Committee (later the World Health Organization). .
Although the league was not successful in getting countries to disarm, they did encourage it through attempts at treaties and conferences. At the Washington Conference in 1921, Britain, France, USA and Japan all agreed to limit the sizes of their navies. This seemed to indicate that a treaty through the League might be passed. In 1923, the leagues first attempt at a disarmament treaty was rejected by Britain, acting in their personal interests. The league also tried to arrange a disarmament conference in 1926, but the draft convention alone took five years. Ultimately, in 1933 it was rejected by Germany. This whole situation could seem a failure, but later international treaties seemed to lessen the need for disarmament. .
The league was somewhat involved in several conflicts between countries during the 20's. The league as a whole did not play a large role in stopping the conflicts, and only helped when asked.
