Medicine River

 

            The major conflicts in the Novel are between Will and Harlen, Will and his brother and Will and Louise. .
             The conflict between Will and Harlen is that Will wants to stay in his own self-absorbed, private existence and Harlen tries to drag Will out into the community. For example, Harlen takes will around town and introduces him to everybody and hands out his business cards, Harlen tries to push Will towards Louise because he feels that Louise should be married and have a father for her Child. Will seems to resist but Harlen acts like somewhat of a father figure as he is constantly looking out for Will's interests.
             The conflict between James and Will is that James left right after their mother's funeral and does not seem to have direct contact with Will aside from sending letters and has appeared to have abandoned Will in the community. .
             The conflict between Will and Louise is one where Louise wants to live independently and seems to be giving signals that she wants a serious relationship with Will but seems to pull away in the end. This is shown when she takes Will around to see houses and she finds one she likes with several bedrooms and a darkroom, this seems to be an obvious signal that she wants to be more serious with Will but then she has the dark room removed and Will is left to continue to guess Louise's intentions. .
             The conflicts between Will and his friend, his brother and his lover are ongoing throughout the Novel but it is something that Will takes in stride. .
