When Absalom gets sentenced the death penalty and dies, it almost destroyed Kumalo's faith. .
Absalom gets a woman pregnant. The only problem is that this occurs during the case of the murder. This produces conflict because Kumalo had taught him that abstinence is very important. Not only does this anger Kumalo but also he is disappointed as well showing that he cares for Absalom like a father or parent. Absalom will not be able to father the newborn because he gets sentenced to death. Kumalo will have to step it up for him and be a father figure for the child. .
Racial cruelty in Africa was at an all time high back then. It has changed for the better and whites and blacks can be brother to brother or father to child. In this novel the whites were almost like an abusive father to the blacks. This is the complete opposite relationship that Kumalo and Absalom had. They were like a father, Kumalo, and a son, Absalom. It is an incredible bond that will and should never be broken.
