Change

From my studies of many different texts, both prescribed and of my choice, I have learned that ' change ' is a process, a transition or alteration that affects all aspects of life. It is a major feature of our contemporary society because socially, environmentally, scientifically and economically the world is in a constant state of flux. I have gained many insights of change from reading and studying " The Door " by Miroslav Holub and " Maestro " by Peter Goldsworthy which were the prescribed texts, and the two of my choice, " Young Grow Old " by Creed and " The Hurricane " directed by Norman Jewison.
" The Door " by Miroslav Holub shows me that change can be confronting. The door in the poem is used as a metaphoric barrier and made me remininisce of times when I have faced a shut door and had to decide whether or not to open it. It made me realise that it is usually the fear of the unknown which makes me hesitate or sometimes not even open the metaphorical door. The gentle and persistent urging " Go and open the door " reinforces that a change is confronting, that many people have trouble embracing a change but sometimes need coaxing into it. The repeated " maybe " and " as if " is used to try to comfort people into the change. People's curiosity is raised and the soft words " maybe " and " as if " make them feel like they will be missing out on something if they do not " open the door ".
" Young Grow Old " by Creed emphasises to me that change can be embraced or resisted. The constant metaphor of the boy and man fighting shows that he is resisting to the change of growing older. "Take a look now the boy is weakened, take a bow and the boy is defeated". This quote shows that there was a stiff resistance put up by the man but also reinforces that change is inevitable as the boy is eventually defeated. If you resist change the consequence is that it will take you longer to adjust. It will not take longer for the change to occur.
