A psychiatrist can listen and make available treatment programs to satisfy a persons needs. The government relies on the prison system to maintain as rehabilitation for first time and repeat offenders of the common law. The idea for the use of a prison as a whole is to rehabilitate and, in most cases, restructure the way of living so that, when released, a person is better off in society than behind bars. .
The many alternatives include, rehabilitation centers, out patient programs and education for the general public. Rehabilitation comes in many forms besides prison. Three kinds are drug rehab, alcohol rehab and behavior modification. Drug rehabs prevent the person from altering his mind and feelings so he/she has to deal with and learn how to be civilized. The in patient programs are usually consistent and less time than what would be received in prison. Rehab centers have proven to be a very effective source of therapy. Alcohol rehabs usually coincide with drug rehabs although the treatment is separate. A person faced with prison for to many DUI"S for instance can pay his fines and do an inpatient treatment. The detoxifying treatment followed by many structured classes proves to be a successful alternative to prison. The military has come up with a program to give a choice between prison and military. If a person chooses to go into the military instead of prison the sentence will be doubled; hence, one facing two years in prison will face four years enlisted in the military. People with lesser charges and minor felonies have this choice. Such methods have proven to be growing in importance; as a result, society is now understanding that to rehabilitate is a win, win situation for the future of society.
