Postpartum Depression is a serious disease that affects as many as 60 percent of new mothers. (Internet) The new mother's may not feel love for their newborn and may have no energy to take care of the child. They may also suffer from insomnia, excessive eating or anorexia, hyperventilation. They often feel guilty and worthless because they know that they should not feel this way. (Internet) There is no set pattern for those who are most likely to be affected by Postpartum Depression but one target group that has been receiving a lot of attention lately are substance abusive women. The articles I looked at discuss the current treatments for Postpartum women who also abuse drugs and alcohol and the effectiveness of the treatments.
The purpose of researching Postpartum Depression and the treatments is to learn how to better care for the women and their children. Postpartum Depression is a serious illness and without proper treatment and attention the children born to women who develop Postpartum Disease may grow up without proper care and in the most serious of cases, some children die of neglect or abuse. Everyone wants to decrease the number of cases of Postpartum Depression and one of the ways to do so is to look at the current treatments and programs and evaluate their success to try to discover ways to improve the existing programs. .
Literature Review.
The articles I reviewed were very informative and thorough. They effectively discussed the current programs for postpartum women. They discussed the research techniques they used as well as the shortcomings of the research. The authors did not try to hide any problems with the research. The articles were easy to understand and helped me to understand the current research and treatments for substance abuse in pregnant or postpartum women. The articles were presented in a very informative and scholarly manner. I would recommend these articles to individuals who are interested in learning more about the current treatments for Postpartum Disease.
