Jonathan Edwards was a very well educated man who went to Yale during his school years. He was very concerned with defining the nature of true religious experience. He wrote a sermon called "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." In his sermon, the sinners were the wicked unbelieving Israelites. They were God's people who lived under the Ten Commandments God had given to them. Edwards claims that the Israelites had no understanding in the Ten commandments and brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit. The thing that keeps the sinners from hell is merely the hand and pleasure of God. Edward says that hell's mouth is wide open and there is nothing between you and hell but the air, and God's power and pleasure is the only thing that keeps you out of hell. The wicked people will slowly descend towards hell and if God would simply let them fall then you would sink fast. God's emotion towards the sinners is angry as it says in the title, and this anger that God has is directed toward the sinners in the sermon. It seems like God takes pleasure in the destruction of sinners, but actually God is very compassionate and patient with the sinners and loves them more than is implied. Though God is angry, it is merely time before he lets the wicked people fall into hell. The Great Awakening happened because of Jonathan Edwards. He wanted the great things in religion to be understood and affect peoples heart. Jonathan Edwards sermon, "Sinners of in the Hands of an Angry God" was the Great Awakening for everyone. He used great enthusiasm in this sermon and it basically scared people of God and of hell. This sermon captured the eyes of people who did not know much or care much about religion and basically awakened them.
