A Raisin in the Sun

A Raisin in the Sun Compare and Contrast Essay.
This paper will discuss the differences between the book and the movie formats of A Raisin in the Sun. The book was written first, so the movie is simply an interpretation of the book. Although they tried very hard to keep the same message, different outlets of expression derive different thoughts and feelings. This paper will point out the differences between these two methods of expression, as well as their similarities.
One change that was felt during the movie was how Walter was portrayed. In the book he seemed the type that was a dreamer that was tired of being stuck in a dead end job. The book showed a man that finally found his chance to move up in the world, but it blew up in his face. In the end, he decided to keep his honor instead of money. The book made a point to show that he was not always a mean selfish husband. There was a scene in the book that included Walter's wife speaking of the great time she had one night when Walter and her went to the movies and held hands. Yet the movie portrayed Walter as a very selfish man. The whole time he cared about absolutely nothing but himself. The only time he was happy was when he was given money to pursue his dream. Perhaps the only reason this selfish Walter was felt more dramatically in the movie, was the fact that he was able to raise his voice in the movie. And he seemed to do that a lot. Reading the book aloud brings a different feel.
The movie also was able to move to different locations, unlike the book, which was written to be acted out on stage. The movie added scenes at Walter's work place while he drove a limousine, in a bar where Walter hung out when he got upset, and at the house in which the family decided to buy. The extra scenes added a lot to the movie, and made it feel more real.
Yet amidst all the differences, a common theme rang though in both the book and the movie.
