Today, people are also travelling more then any other time in history. Globalization can also lead to many cultural disadvantages. Globalization leads to a greater chance of reactions to globalization to be violent in order to preserve cultural heritage. With people travelling more freely there is a greater risk of diseases being transported unintentionally between nations. Globalization can lead to the spread of a materialistic lifestyle where people believe that consumption is the path to prosperity. It can be argued that globalization threatens culture and religious underpinnings of society. Without any borders, globalization lets powerful businesses to intrude into a local culture, changing the way people are used to things working. Globalization therefore has many advantages and disadvantages to communications and culture. Globalization could be potentially dangerous to many different societies and end up hurting more people then helping.
Corporations also play a major role in globalization. Just as there were many advantages to communications and culture with respect to globalization, there are many advantages to corporations participating in globalization but they are all overshadowed by the disadvantages of corporations participating in globalization. Corporations have greater flexibility to operate across borders thus, potentially creating more jobs. Corporations push for more free trade between countries and that would also lead to greater ease of transportation for goods and people. The disadvantages of globalization are much more significant. Because there are no global rules corporations do what they please. Corporations like Nike for example, take advantage of this globalization because they can use the cheapest labour. There is an increased flow of skilled and non-skilled jobs from developed to developing nations as corporations seek out the low paying labour. Corporate influence on nation-states often far exceeds that of civil society organizations and average individuals.
